FIRST UNION RECOGNIZED BY FLORIDA EDUCATION COMMISSIONER AS OUTSTANDING BUSINESS PARTNER
First Union National Bank of Broward County Cited For `Excellence In Education' Program
FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla., March 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Florida Education Commissioner Frank T. Brogan will honor First Union National Bank of Broward county along with 58 other businesses for their valuable contributions to Florida public schools at the Ninth Annual Commissioner's Business Recognition Awards today March 7 at Sea World. The event is being held in conjunction with the Florida Partners in Education Conference.
"The involvement of Florida's business community has never been more important than it is today," said Commissioner Brogan. "Business has played a significant role in reshaping and reforming Florida's public education system. They are leaders in their industries and their support is enabling us to produce future leaders prepared for the diversity of tomorrow's culture and economy."
A review board selected First Union for recognition from among 500 nominees. They based their selection on:
-- Quality and longevity of the partnership, meaningful involvement of the private sector;
-- Impact and outcome of the projects, especially as the partnerships related to improved student performance; and
-- Commitment of the organization, including in-kind and financial contributions.

"We have a can do attitude when it comes to bettering education opportunities for our children."
First Union National Bank of Broward county was cited for its "Excellence in Education" program. Under the program bank employees volunteer at area schools as teacher helpers, tutors, readers and mentors during regular school hours.
Every First Union employee has four hours of paid time off each month to volunteer in local schools and to participate in parent activities.
First Union was nominated for the award by the Broward County School District.
