 FIRST UNION PROMOTES SPRINGS TO SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT
 CHARLOTTE, N.C., Oct. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- First Union Corporation (NYSE: FTU) has promoted Leonard F. (Lenny) Springs to senior vice president.
 Springs has been vice president of community affairs and assistant director of First Union's Community Reinvestment Act programs since 1989. Prior to joining the corporate staff, he served as vice president of corporate affairs and community relations for First Union National Bank of Georgia.
 Springs directs the corporation's community outreach efforts throughout the Southeast and at the national level. He specializes in promoting public awareness and instituting progressive programs for community advancement.

Massa, director of community reinvestment and corporate communications for First Union Corp.

 Springs joined First Union in 1983 as a business development officer. His accomplishments include the design, development, and implementation of programs including commercial lending for small and minority businesses and education advancement for low- and moderate- income customers.
 A native of South Carolina, Springs holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from Voorhees College of South Carolina. He is currently on the board of trustees for Voorhees College and is a past president of the school's National Alumni Association. He is an active member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
 Springs serves on the national board of the NAACP and on the board of trustees for the NAACP's Special Contribution Fund. He is also on the inaugural board of directors for Charlotte's Northwest Corridor Community Development Corporation which encourages economic development in low-income neighborhoods. Springs is the founding president of 100 Black Men of America, Inc., Charlotte Chapter. He serves on Johnson C. Smith University's board of directors and its Community Development Corporation, Voorhees College's board of trustees, Spirit Square Art Center's board of directors, Central Charlotte Division of the Chamber of Commerce's advisory council, and the Carolinas Minority Supplier Development Councils, Inc. board of directors. Formerly, he was vice chairman for the South Carolina Conference of the NAACP.
 Springs was recognized as one of America's top corporate officers in the September 1992 edition of Dollars and Sense magazine.
