FIRST UNION HONORED BY CAROLINAS MINORITY SUPPLIER DEVELOPMENT COUNCILS, INC.

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Oct. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- First Union has been recognized as Regional Corporation of The Year by the Carolinas Minority Supplier Development Councils, Inc. (CMSDC). First Union National Bank of North Carolina President Mac Everett accepted the award, which was presented at the CMSDC's annual banquet and Business Opportunity Conference in Charlotte.
"Our commitment to our Minority Purchasing Program is clear and constant. It means going beyond 'business as usual'. It requires an openness to change. We have embraced this challenge, because it is making our company and our community stronger," Everett said.
First Union began its Minority Purchasing Program in January 1990. Among other achievements, First Union's corporate purchasing area spent $5.7 million in the past year with certified minority businesses. Products and services provided by these vendors have included advertising, attorneys, audio-visual work, beepers, catering, construction, consultation, delivery, employment services, office products, florists, landscaping, printing, security and writing.
In addition, First Union presented a Total Quality Management Seminar this year to help minority vendors prepare for the Supplier Certification Program that the corporation is implementing. Approximately 90 minority and women-owned businesses attended.
Organized to promote growth and excellence in the Carolinas' minority-owned businesses, the CMSDC honors corporations and public sector groups at the local, regional and national level for their commitment in purchasing products and services from minority-owned vendors. First Union is a corporate member of the council.
At June 30, 1993, First Union Corporation (NYSE: FTU FTUpr) reported assets of $72 billion, and operated 1,434 banking offices in Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, Tennessee, Maryland and Washington, D.
