FIRST UNION 400 NASCAR RACE SET FOR APRIL 18 IN NORTH WILKESBORO

NORTH WILKESBORO, N.C., March 29 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 40,000 fans are expected to come and watch NASCAR's greatest drivers at the First Union 400 on Sunday, April 18, in a battle for rights to the winners' share of a track record of $640,297 in awards -- up 16 percent from last year.
Davey Allison is the defending champion of the 400-lap race -- his first victory here. He's expected to defend his title against some of NASCAR's biggest names, such as Darrell Waltrip, Dale Earnhardt, Geoff and Brett Bodine, Terry Labonte, Rusty Wallace, Sterling Marlin and Bill Elliott.
The First Union 400, which draws fans from across the Southeast, is one of NASCAR's premier races and an annual stop on the Winston Cup circuit. First Union began sponsoring the race to continue the tradition begun in 1979 by Northwestern Financial Corp., which merged with First Union in 1985.
The 1993 grand marshal is Jim Roper, who won the first race in what is now the Winston Cup Series in 1949, on a dirt track in Charlotte.
To show its appreciation to customers, First Union will sponsor "First Union Day," on Friday, April 16, with free tickets for employees and customers to practice and pole position qualifying runs. Customers interested in free tickets for April 16 should call one of their local First Union branches.
Sports sponsorships have become an important part of First Union's involvement in the communities it serves. First Union is a major sponsor of the 1993 Tour DuPont, America's premier 1,100-mile 11-day cycling event, which is coming to North Carolina for the first time and will end May 16 in front of First Union's Greensboro main office.
First Union also sponsors the First Union Grand Prix in Atlanta, a 125-mile international bicycling event set for May 2. The official bank of the Charlotte Hornets, First Union also sponsors the Charlotte Knights and Durham Bulls.
First Union National Bank of North Carolina is a principal subsidiary of Charlotte-based First Union Corporation (NYSE: FTU FTUpr), which will have approximately 1,474 banking offices and $71 billion in assets when pending mergers are complete, making it the nation's eighth largest bank holding company.
