FIRST UNION'S VIRGINIA BOARD ELECTS THREE NEW MEMBERS

 ROANOKE, Va., April 29 /PRNewswire/ -- First Union Corporation's (NYSE: FTU FTUpr) Virginia Board of Directors has elected the presidents of three area companies to serve on the board, the bank announced today.
 Joining the board are: Glenn Hunsucker, president and chief operating officer of Bassett Furniture Industries, Inc. of Bassett; Thomas Robertson, president and chief executive officer of Carilion Health System of Roanoke; and Glenn Thornhill, Jr., president and chief executive officer of Maid Bess Corp. of Salem.
 "We're extremely pleased to have these three individuals join First Union's Virginia board," said Warner Dalhouse, chairman and chief executive officer of First Union Corp. of Virginia. "Each brings to the board a wealth of business expertise, a strong commitment to community service, and a solid understanding of Virginia's economic potential."
 Ben Jenkins, president and chief operating officer of First Union Corp. of Virginia, said the three new members and the board's current 12 members "will provide substantial policy direction as First Union charts its course toward significant growth and expansion throughout the Virginia market."
 Hunsucker serves on the board of governors for the Atlanta Merchandise Mart and the board of directors at Patrick Henry Community College. He also serves as a director of the Catawba Valley Community College Foundation and the Drug Task Force of Martinsville and Henry County.
 Robertson, who joined Carilion Health System in 1969, also serves as chairman of the Roanoke Valley Business Council. In the past, he has served as president of the Roanoke Valley Chamber of Commerce, a member of the board of the Roanoke Valley Development Corp., president of the Roanoke Area Hospital Council, and chairman of the Virginia Hospital Association.
 Thornhill, who has worked at Maid Bess Corp. since 1963, also serves on the Salem City School Board. In addition, he is chairman of the United Way of Roanoke Valley, president-elect of the Art Museum of Western Virginia, and a trustee of Roanoke College. In the past, he has served as chairman of the Roanoke Valley Business Council and president of Roanoke Valley Industries.
