FIRST U.S. NAVY T-45A GOSHAWK TO BE BUILT AT McDONNELL AIRCRAFT CO. TOOK WING DEC. 16, 1991 DURING A FLIGHT TEST OVER MISSOURI COUNTRYSIDE
ST. LOUIS, Jan. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The first U.S. Navy T-45A Goshawk to be built at McDonnell Aircraft Co. took wing Dec. 16, 1991, during a 1.1-hour flight test across the Missouri countryside.
The aircraft is the first to incorporate the improvements required by the U.S. Navy in 1988, including a slatted wing, more powerful engine and improvements to the longitudinal control, lateral/directional stability and speed brake systems. Following acceptance flights by U.S. Navy pilots and a systems evaluation period at the Naval Air Test Center in Patuxent River, Md., the aircraft will be delivered to Training Wing Two at Naval Air Station Kingsville, Texas, for instructor pilot training.
The initial production rate for the T-45A aircraft is expected to be 12 per year. Instructor pilot training is set to begin at Naval Air Station Kingsville, in January, with the first student pilot class beginning in late 1992. The aircraft is the centerpiece of the T-45 Training System (T45TS), which also includes academics, flight trainers, contractor logistic support and a Training Integration System, which manages and integrates the entire system. Ground system elements are currently in place at Kingsville, the initial Navy T45TS training site.
