 FIRST ROVING TOW SERVICE LAUNCHED

Authority for Freeways and Expressways and the California Highway Patrol will announce start-up of a roving tow service for the 680/24 Project area on Tuesday, Sept. 1, at 1910 Olympic Blvd. in Walnut Creek. The tow trucks are part of Caltrans' program to ease congestion for motorists in the 680/24 Project zone. They are the first installment of the Bay Area Freeway Service Patrol, a free road assistance program to improve traffic conditions.
 Members of the press are invited to ride with CHP vehicles tailing the tow trucks on their patrol immediately following the proceedings. To help those planning the number of CHP vehicles, please contact Doug Campbell by Friday, Aug. 28 to reserve a spot.

 BACKGROUND: By early 1993 a fleet of 35 tow trucks, named the
 Freeway Service Patrol, will monitor 50 miles of Bay
 Area freeways primarily during the weekday commute
 hours as part of the region's Joint Urban Mobility
 Program (JUMP Start) for reducing traffic congestion
 and smog. The trucks will offer free, on-the-spot
 assistance to stranded motorists and quickly clear
 clogged lanes. The initial tow service on the 680/24
 Project is funded by Caltrans' Traffic Management
 Plan to reduce traffic during the reconstruction of
 the 680/24 interchange, and will operate on a special
 schedule, seven days a week. When construction is
 completed, it will be operated as a regular, weekday
 only, Freeway Service Patrol.
