FIRST QUARTER OF 1993 U.S. ELECTRONIC FACTORY SALES TOTAL NEARLY $72 BILLION, UP 6.5 PERCENT

WASHINGTON, April 19 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. factory sales of electronic equipment, components and related products totaled nearly $72 billion for the first quarter of 1993, resulting in a 6.5 percent increase over last year's first quarter sales of $67.6 billion, according to preliminary data released today by the Electronic Industries Association (EIA).
In announcing the first quarter factory shipments, EIA President Peter F. McCloskey stated: "These preliminary statistics continue to reflect growth in this important manufacturing sector. These statistics are a good indication of what should be a healthy 1993 for the U.S. electronics industry."
The following breakdown examines each sector's performance.
The components sector sales were up 10.4 percent from $15.4 billion in 1992, to $17 billion year-to-date (YTD).
The telecommunications manufacturers hit $8.8 billion in 1993 or a 7.1 percent improvement over the $8.3 billion produced YTD in 1992.
Computers and peripherals showed the healthiest improvement hitting $14.8 billion for the first quarter, or a 17 percent growth rate over last year's $12.7 billion.
Electromedical equipment went down 0.2 percent, going from $1.931 billion in 1992 to $1.927 billion thus far in 1993.
The U.S. consumer electronics sector produced $2.2 billion worth of goods or 3.6 percent over the $2.1 billion produced in the United States in 1992.
Other related products and services hit $13.2 billion in the first quarter of 1993, or down 0.3 percent over the $13.2 billion produced in 1992.
The industrial electronic sector improved slightly, representing a 3.5 percent gain from $6.4 billion in 1992, to $6.6 billion YTD.
Also declining during the first three months of 1993, the other communications area(A), which declined 2.9 percent from $7.6 billion in 1992 to $7.4 billion in the first quarter of 1993.
For more than 69 years the Electronic Industries Association has been the national trade organization representing U.S. electronics manufacturers. Committed to the competitiveness of the American producer, EIA represents the entire spectrum of companies involved in the manufacture of electronic components, parts, systems and equipment for communications, industrial, government and consumer-end uses.
