FIRST OIL FROM NEW NORTH SEA FIELD ANNOUNCED BY KERR-McGEE

OKLAHOMA CITY, Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Production of oil from Gryphon, the United Kingdom's newest North Sea oil field, began today, less than 10 months after approval of the development plan by the British government.
Gryphon will be operated by Kerr-McGee Oil (U.K.) PLC, a subsidiary of Oklahoma-based Kerr-McGee Corp. (NYSE: KMG). It is the second of three North Sea fields scheduled for production this year in which Kerr-McGee has an interest.
The field, located in 370 feet of water 200 miles northeast of Aberdeen, Scotland, in Block 9/18b, is being developed by Kerr-McGee, a 25 percent owner, in partnership with three other companies. Other owners and their percentages are: Clyde Petroleum plc, 35 percent; Santa Fe Exploration (U.K.) Ltd., 25 percent; and Aran Energy plc, 15 percent. Total development cost was about $384 million.
Anticipated peak production is 50,000 barrels a day by mid-1994, with total production approximating 96 million barrels over the 15- to 20-year life of the field, according to Jim Guion, managing director of Kerr-McGee Oil (U.K.) PLC.
"Gryphon field has been put on production in record time," Guion said. "In addition to using the first permanently moored production storage ship of its type in the North Sea, the Gryphon team has achieved a number of other U.K. oil industry 'firsts.'
"It is the first application of a new type of subsea wellhead tree that is simpler and should be safer than conventional equipment. We are also using water from a shallow aquifer for injecting into the oil reservoir, instead of the usual sea water. This avoids potentially severe scaling problems," Guion said.
