FIRST MD 520N ENTERS SERVICE IN HAWAII; WORLD'S QUIETEST HELICOPTER WILL BE USED FOR AERIAL TOURS, UTILITY DUTIES

MAUI, Hawaii, Oct. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Windward Aviation has become the first operator of an MD 520N in the Hawaiian Islands.
The MD 520N, the world's quietest helicopter, will be used to expand Windward's utility services and to help the company enter the aerial tour business, according to Don Shearer, owner and operator of Windward Aviation.
Windward Aviation is a versatile utility operator, providing helicopter services in the state of Hawaii for county, state and federal agencies, as well as for the private sector.
"Our operations consistently put us down in the 'low-and-slow environment' where only a helicopter can perform those missions," explained Shearer. "Thus, noise is a continuing concern of our company and of the communities in which we operate.
"The MD 520N offers us the quietest helicopter in the world, increased safety because it operates without a tail rotor, and greater power reserve compared with the MD 500D and MD 500E."
He added, "All of this provides us with a higher level of confidence and comfort when operating at slow speeds while low to the ground in confined areas."
Shearer said the MD 520N will be used by police and fire units, as well as by the National Park Service.
In addition, the MD 520N will be used to provide helicopter tour customers with a spectacular view of Maui's 10,000-foot-high Haleakala Crater where density altitudes can reach 13,000 feet.
"We believe that many visitors are as concerned about noise pollution as we are and will select an environmentally friendly aircraft for island tours," Shearer said. The MD 520N comfortably holds two passengers in both the front and rear cabins, with all having window seats.
"There's definitely a market for this size tour helicopter in Hawaii," he added.
The delivery to Windward Aviation follows a very successful five- island tour and subsequent two-month flight evaluation of a McDonnell Douglas-owned MD 520N this summer.
During the initial MD 520N's tour of duty in Hawaii, it was praised by friends and foes of helicopters alike for its quiet operations.
"In fact," said Bart Kent, pacific region business development manager for McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Systems, "there were virtually no complaints from citizens who interacted with the MD 520N on the big island of Hawaii."
Many of the approximately 1,000 visitors who flew the five-place turbine rotorcraft this summer cited the aircraft's smooth ride, low vibration, and all-forward-looking seats for outstanding visibility of Hawaii's natural beauty.
Shearer, who has evaluated the MD 520N, said the helicopter "has exceeded" all of his expectations and will play a major role in future expansion of Windward Aviation.
