 FIRST COMMERCIAL 128 CHANNEL EEG/EP SYSTEM INSTALLED AT NIH
 HERNDON, Va., July 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Neuro Scan, Inc., a manufacturer of advanced medical research products, announced today that the company has installed the first commercially available 128 channel electroencephalography (EEG) and evoked potentials (EP) system in the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) campus in Bethesda, Md.
 To facilitate new discoveries about the brain and how it functions, NIH/NINDS contracted with Neuro Scan to design, develop and manufacture this new system called ESI-128 (Electronic Signal Imaging).
 "At present, electroencephalography (EEG) is the one technology with the capability of recording information from the brain in real- time, as the brain functions," stated Dr. Stephen F. Sands, principal investigator for the project and chairman of Neuro Scan. "Other imaging technologies such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides brain structure images every one second while EEG records brain activity in milliseconds."
 The ESI-128 incorporates the use of 16 digital signal processors and five computers to handle the amount of information being acquired. Neuro Scan's STIM System is interfaced to the ESI-128 for the presentation of auditory and visual testing to the patient.
 "Technologies for imaging of the brain are moving forward rapidly. We expect that the next phase of development will be the combination of these images which will provide an insight on both function and structure," stated Sands.
 Neuro Scan has been in operation since 1989 and has products in over 150 university and medical research institutions worldwide. The company has an engineering and manufacturing facility in Houston and technological support center based in El Paso, Texas.
