FIRST '93 MERCEDES MODELS ON SALE IN CALIFORNIA
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- The first four models in the

1993 Mercedes-Benz car line go on sale in California this week. The full lineup will include 20 models, the most ever offered in California where Mercedes sells more new cars than in any other state.
The first arrivals include the latest versions of the 190E 2.3 and 190E 2.6 sports sedans, and two S-Class top-of-the-line sedans: the 300SE and the long-wheelbase 500SEL.
The four-cylinder 190E 2.3, with a suggested retail price of $28,950 (unchanged from the 1992 version), was recently named the "best overall value" among luxury cars priced under $40,000 by Intellichoice, the San Jose, Calif.-based independent research firm which looks at the total cost of vehicle ownership over five years. The companion 190E 2.6 comes with a more powerful 2.6-liter six- cylinder engine and additional comfort and convenience features.
The other two models going on sale this week are part of the highly acclaimed S-Class range introduced last October as successors to a generation of top sedans which enjoyed 11 years of popularity.
The 300SE is equipped with a six-cylinder, 24-valve powerplant, while the long-wheelbase 500SEL is powered by a 5-liter, 32-valve V8 engine and features such standard equipment as ASR traction control, rear axle level control and a charcoal filter in the ventilation system which can absorb odors and gaseous pollutants before they enter the passenger compartment.
The S-Class cars have the distinction of being the world's first to eliminate ozone-depleting CFCs in both the air conditioning systems and in the manufacturing process. The industry leader in this area, Mercedes-Benz expects to completely phase out CFCs in all models by the fall of 1993.
Another environmentally friendly feature of the S-Class cars is that they are designed for recyclability. Reusable components are easily dismantled, and all plastic parts weighing more than 3.5 ounces are labeled for recycling.
The 15 remaining 1993 Mercedes-Benz models for California will be introduced beginning in October. Among them will be the 300CE Cabriolet (a convertible version of the popular mid-size Mercedes), the V12-powered 600SL coupe/roadster and the all-new 500SEC and 600SEC limited-edition S-Class coupes.
Eighteen of the 20 models will have the Mercedes Supplemental Restraint System with dual front airbags as standard equipment. The two 190E models have driver-side airbags and SRS standard.
All Mercedes-Benz cars come with a four-year or 50,000-mile limited warranty. Best of all, owners of any Mercedes -- regardless of age or model -- have access to 24-hour Roadside Assistance, provided by factory-trained Mercedes-Benz technicians.
