CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Individual, Inc. announced today the immediate availability of First! for cc:Mail, the world's most popular LAN-based electronic mail system. This new capability enables customers of First!, a customized news service for high level executives and workgroups, to quickly and easily retrieve news stories using cc:Mail. The popular cc:Mail electronic mail software has an installed base of more than three million users.
First! is the leading customized news service that delivers highly relevant news every business day via fax, electronic mail and Lotus Notes. Customers are provided with custom-tailored news each morning using a unique approach that daily scans some 12,000 stories and then automatically sends only those relevant to each client. News sources span the globe and include industry-specific newswires and publications as well as traditional business wires.
Customers of First! who choose the cc:Mail option enjoy a number of advantages over other network delivery methods. Because First! is transmitted directly into the cc:Mail Router at a customer's site, the news service is available immediately upon receipt either as a single file or as a menu of relevant news. Windows users can employ cc:Mail's message management capability to set up rules that notify them of incoming news and perform actions triggered by keywords in the message subject or body text or other criteria.
In addition, First! fully supports cc:Mail's bulletin board feature, which provides automatic access to multiple users. And because with First! customers may purchase redistribution rights, users may access the bulletin board without fear of violating copyright.
"Electronic messaging is rapidly moving beyond simple point-to-point e-mail," said Larry Crume, vice president, Electronic Messaging and Mobile Computing Division, Lotus Development Corp. (NASDAQ: LOTS). "Value-added services that take advantage of a mail system's transport capability are becoming widespread. We're pleased Individual is leading the way in providing high value-added services to e-mail users."
"By combining First! with cc:Mail, our customers can now benefit from more timely, reliable news delivery, take advantage of cc:Mail's bulletin board and other message management capabilities, and otherwise leverage all of the features found in this popular e-mail package," said Paul Pinella, product marketing manager for First! at Individual, Inc.
Individual, Inc., based in Cambridge, Mass., with offices in Burlingame, Calif., was founded in 1989 to build and operate an "information refinery" -- filtering and customizing information from a broad range of electronic sources. First! is created by a proprietary, patent-pending technology based on an exclusive license for SMART, a text retrieval and filtering software developed at Cornell University. Individual's HeadsUp service is a personal daily news service providing the day's news in a briefs format, and offering a unique interactive retrieval system for the full text of articles.

Lotus cc:Mail runs on all major LANs, providing transparent connectivity to major private and public electronic mail systems and fax machines worldwide. cc:Mail offers a wide range of electronic mail and accessory packages and is supported by a growing community of more than 150 add-on products.
