A NEW programme has been launched to foster leadership skills among manufacturing firms in Huddersfield.

The Northern Leadership Academy is spearheading the drive - with support from Huddersfield University and regional development agency Yorkshire Forward.

The academy's new Leadership Journey programme aims to ensure that the region's small and medium-sized businesses have the entrepreneurial skills in place to tackle the challenges of the future.

The programme, which also involves the National Skills Academy for Manufacturing, was launched following meetings between company directors from across the Yorkshire region to discuss common problems and ways to build better businesses.

Steve Gibbs, of the leadership and FTSE management department at Huddersfield University's Business School, said: "A major advantage of the new programme is that participants can look at the real problems which concern them, rather than considering hypothetical ones - and focus on real solutions through group discussion, coaching and access to experts.

"Put simply, the Leadership Journey it is about solving problems and getting things done." Mr Gibbs said: "Evidence suggests that small and medium-sized businesses grow in relation to the personal development of their business leaders.

"Directors enrolling of the programme will attend action learning sets, networking events, master classes and join social networks to communicate together as a group solving problems.

"Directors know times are tough, but they also know if they can help get their businesses through the present difficulties, they can see how things could be so much better in the future." atFTSE opened at 4441.9
