GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Feb. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Clarification Research

Inc. has been granted an exclusive, 10-year North American license for a unique, proprietary emerald clarity enhancement process developed by company Chairman T.L. Lee. Known as the CRI Process, or the "Lee Process," the secret emerald treatment improves the internal clarity and transparency of emeralds by reducing the visibility of certain types of flaws which mar the attractiveness and aesthetic appeal of polished emeralds.
The proprietary process improves the appearance of emeralds by reducing the optical effects of certain flaws which obstruct, or interfere with, the transmission of light within the gems. Virtually all natural emeralds contain fractures and other flaws as a result of the geological and crystallization processes which form them.
Emeralds with few visible flaws normally command the highest market prices. The CRI Process "invades" emeralds and profoundly reduces, or in some cases, eliminates the visibility of many flaws to the eye. While the degree of emerald clarity improvement varies among individual gems, the effect of the process on emeralds is often dramatic.
While company officials will not specifically comment on emerald market value increases which may result from the treatment, the company does encourage gem dealers and jewelers to disclose the fact that emeralds have been enhanced by the proprietary process.
The CRI Process was independently developed by Lee in the course of gemological research spanning more than two decades. Lee began gemstone enhancement research in 1962. Subsequent applied research included gemstone synthesis and corundum (ruby and sapphire) enhancement. The author of numerous articles and treatises for gemological publications, Lee continues to direct ongoing applied research in diamond clarity enhancement.
Lee also serves as chairman of a gemstone marketing and processing company, a communication concern, and as a director of Gemstone Resources plc, a London-based gemstone exploration company.
In a related action, the company announced three executive appointments.
Robert M. O'Connor has been appointed president, succeeding Lee, who continues as chairman. A native of Chicago and a graduate of Bradley University, O'Connor, 51, assumes executive responsibility for corporate administration, including production operations. Prior to joining the company, O'Connor served in executive capacities in the medical technology and optical instrumentation industries.
Mark N. Olson has been appointed vice president, with executive responsibility for marketing and client services. Olson, 42, a graduate of Michigan State University, has served in executive capacities in manufacturing and materials processing, with emphasis in international trade.
John C. Buckley III has been appointed senior counsel to the company. With a background in commercial and international law, Buckley is a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy and Harvard Law School.
Clarification Research Inc. maintains administrative, research and laboratory production facilities in Grand Rapids. The company is privately held and does not report financial results.
