FIRESTONE, KMART ANNOUNCE NEW AGREEMENT

NASHVILLE, Tenn., June 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Firestone, "America's tire since 1900," today announced that its Firestone passenger and light truck tires are now available in all 1,000 Kmart automotive centers.
"Kmart and Firestone are a perfect match. Both names feature rich heritages with an all-American theme and our commitment to quality and value go hand-in-hand," said Snuffy Smith, Bridgestone/Firestone corporate accounts manager.
"As we continue to expand and update our Kmart stores nationwide, we're also improving our merchandise assortment with a wider array of quality brands shoppers want," said Tim Findlay, divisional vice president of merchandising hardline division for Kmart.
"Our partnership with Bridgestone/Firestone combines their experience in the tire business and Kmart's extensive network of automotive service centers," added Findlay.
The Firestone tire line available in Kmart automotive service centers represents the brand's broad demographic strength. The popular FR721 and FR480 are mass market selections and the F560 is a well- accepted import. The Firehawk SS is a popular performance tire, and the ATX II and R4S are top light truck products.
Smith noted Kmart and Firestone are both strong in product promotion. "Kmart does an excellent job in promotion and with our similar themes and efforts in this area, we should see strong synergy," he said.
Both companies are heavily involved in motorsports. Kmart is a sponsor of the Newman/Haas Indy Car racing team and recently announced the sponsorship of the McLaren Formula 1 racing team.
Firestone recently announced a return to the big-time fast lane, with plans to supply tires for Indy Cars in 1995. Firestone also sponsors the Indy Lights Championship and the Firehawk Endurance Championship.
"This is a very significant relationship for Firestone in terms of size and prestige," Smith added. "The Kmart name speaks for itself and we are very proud to join in this partnership."
