FIREBIRD - THE OFFICIAL NASCAR PACE CAR - RETURNS TO DAYTONA 500 BY STP

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Feb. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Pontiac will pace the Daytona 500 by STP for the 22nd consecutive year on Feb. 14, with the epitome of Pontiac sports car driving excitement -- the newly styled and engineered 1993 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am.
"After a six year absence, it will be exciting to see the Trans Am pacing the Daytona 500 and other NASCAR races across the country," said John Middlebrook, Pontiac general manager. "The new Firebird is the epitome of Pontiac sports car driving excitement in the '90s and there's no better place to showcase its unmitigated power than at the Super Bowl of Winston Cup racing."
Identical to the newly styled and engineered production Trans Am arriving at dealerships this year, the sleekly designed bright red Firebird features a 5.7-liter, 275 hp V8 engine teamed with a four-speed automatic transmission.
White Pace Car graphics appear on the Trans Am's bold and highly styled exterior. The exterior features a steeply raked 68 degree windshield and the use of composite body panels that greatly assisted in designing Trans Am's aggressive looks.
Firebird's affiliation with Daytona is as long lasting as the nameplate itself. A first year, first generation model paced the 1967 race. Today, that car is a fixture in the Daytona International Speedway gift shop with the signatures of those who drove in the race 26 years ago scrawled across its body panels.
During Pontiac's 26 years pacing the Super Bowl of NASCAR racing, a Firebird has paced the Daytona 500 by STP 16 of those years.
The 1993 Firebird Trans Am Pace Car will lead NASCAR fields to the green flag at 17 other Winston Cup races in 1993.
