FIRE KILLS BROTHERS.

Byline: BEN GRIFFITHS; JUSTIN PENROSE

TWO young brothers died when they were trapped in their bedroom as fire ripped through their home yesterday.

Neighbours tried desperately to rescue Mackenzie, seven, and Charlie, five, but were beaten back by flames.

Mum and dad, Alex and Lee Whitton, escaped with their other children - six-monthold Jack, Thomas, aged nine, and Adam, 16, by jumping from a first floor window.

Mackenzie's godmother, Beverley Cockram, who lives near the family in Bradley Stoke, Bristol, said: "I was trying to jump up and drag the brothers out of the window, but it was just too hard.

"Thomas jumped, but Mackenzie and Charlie were in there. I was trying to jump up and grab the window ledge, but it was melting and I couldn't get them."

Patrick Moore, 57, said he was woken by screams. He said: "It was horrendous."

Police and the fire brigade are investigating.
