FINLAND AUTHORIZES FORMALIZATION OF AGREEMENT WITH
U.S. GOVERNMENT TO PURCHASE HORNET FIGHTERS
ST. LOUIS, June 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The government of Finland has authorized its minister of defense to formalize an agreement with the U.S. government to purchase 64 F/A-18 Hornet fighters.
The Finnish government said today that Minister of Defense Elisabeth Rehn will sign the agreement by June 15. The deal, which includes 57 single-seat F/A-18C models and seven two-seat D models along with maintenance support, training and weapons systems, is worth about $3 billion.
Finland announced May 6, that it had selected the F/A-18, built by McDonnell Douglas (NYSE: MD), as the winner in its DX fighter competition. The aircraft will be used by the Finnish Air Force as its premier fighter for air defense.
The negotiations for the contract were based on a preliminary Memorandum of Understanding between the Finnish and U.S. governments dated May 6. On May 19, McDonnell Douglas committed to meeting the requirement of 100 percent offset.
Deliveries of Finland's F/A-18s will begin in late 1995 and continue through the year 2000.
More than 1,100 F/A-18 Hornets are in service worldwide with the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps and the air forces of Canada, Australia, Spain and Kuwait.
