FIND PERFECT MAN; From TT motorbike thrill to fascinating history, beautiful beaches and famous movie locations, you'll never forget a trip to the Isle of Man.
Man to man Famous for its TT motorbike races and tail-less cats, the Isle of Man has a unique and fascinating culture as well as beautiful beaches and historic castles.
Location, location, location Download the Isle of Man movie map from isleofmanfilm.com and visit locations such as the Gaiety Theatre used in Me and Orson Welles; the Niarbyl thatched cottage in Waking Ned or Keeping Mum; and Marine Drive, the cliff-edged road where Ewan McGregor was pursued in a high-speed bike chase in Stormbreaker.
Independent streak The island is still self-governing and the Manx parliament - Tynwald - is the oldest continuous parliament in the world, dating back more than 1000 years to the Vikings. It's fun to take part in a rowdy parliamentary session in the Old House of Keyes in Castleton, where debate is presided over by a life-like hologram Speaker.
Splashing out Manx currency is different only in appearance rather than value and can easily be exchanged in UK banks. Manx Gaelic is spoken as well as English. Island specialities include Manx ice cream, Queenies (sweet scallops), fresh seafood, honey, cheese, organic lamb, chocolate, real ales and kippers that can be posted vacuum-packed to any UK or Irish address.
Anyone for TT? The 600 motoring miles many without a speed limit) are a lure to bikers, especially during the famous TT (Tourist Trophy) Festival Fortnight. The event was begun over 100 years ago by an American - James Gordon Bennett Jr.
A likely tail Legend has it that Manx cats were the last animals to enter Noah's ark and as the door slammed shut after them, it accidentally severed their tails. Science suggests the origin of the species was the result of a cat cross-breeding with a mountain hare. There are cuddly, soft toy versions to take home as souvenirs.
On the right track Children and adults alike will love the horse-drawn 'toast-rack' trams trotting along the promenade in Douglas; the puffing steam engines; the Manx Electric trains and Snaefell Mountain Railway which chugs all the way up 1:12 gradients to the highest summit, where it is possible to see Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales.
Wheelie big The Laxey Wheel is the largest waterwheel in the world. It is 22m in diameter and was built in 1854 to pump water from the mineshafts. Climb the spiral staircase to the top for breath-taking views.
Great a-Peel The village of Peel is home to the House of Manannan Museum, which uses state-of-the-art displays to explore the island's Celtic, Viking and Maritime traditions.
