FIND FRED'S MEDAL; Hunt is on for City captain's missing 1927 Cup Final memento.

THE FA Cup winners' medal belonging to the only Cardiff City captain ever to hold aloft the famous trophy is missing, say family members.

Close relatives of 1927 cup-winning captain Fred Keenor have told the South Wales Echo they have no idea where the medal is.

A Cardiff City and Wales legend, he returned from World War I with a leg wound before leading the Bluebirds to promotion to the First Division and two cup finals in three years, the first in 1925.

And as the current crop of City players prepare for a cup final appearance on May 17 that could see them repeat the 1927 win, Keenor's relatives appealed for information about his medal's whereabouts.

The player, pictured, who died in 1972, came from a large family with six brothers and six sisters. It's possible he passed the medal on to one of his siblings and they in turn gave it to one of their children. Fred himself had seven children.

They were called Heather, Graham, Alfred, Frederick, Brynly, Nancy and Gladys.

Alfred and Frederick were both killed during the Second World War, while Gladys, Graham and Nancy are also dead.

His daughter Heather Jones says she has no idea as to the where abouts of her father's FA cup medal.

Mrs Jones, 78, said: "Being daughters it didn't seem important to us and yet it was far more important to me and my sisters than it was to some male members of the family. My sister Nancy had an idea where it was, but unfortunately she died last year."

Mrs Jones and her husband Brian live just a mile from her brother Brynly, in Tunbridge Wells, and say he, too, is very much in the dark as to its current location.

One family member, who did not wish to be named, said that after his career ended Fred pawned the medal before it was brought back into the family.

They said, "Fred was very poorly paid - you're talking back in the old days when footballers were paid a pittance.

"Possibly he pawned it and I think one of Fred's sisters- in-law found out about it and bought it and gave it to Graham."

Graham's daughter Valerie Thomas, from Cardiff, said she has no idea as to its where abouts.
