 FINALISTS ANNOUNCED FOR 1992 NCR BOOK AWARD;
 MOST VALUABLE SINGLE BOOK PRIZE IN UNITED KINGDOM
 DAYTON, Ohio, May 13 /PRNewswire/ -- NCR Corporation today announced the four finalists for the 1992 NCR Book Award: Wild Swans - Three Daughters of China by Jun Chang, Columbus by Felipe Fernandez -Armesto, Bernard Shaw - Volume 3, The Lure of Fantasy 1918-1950 by Michael Holroyd, and A Life of Picasso - Volume 1 - 1881-1906 by John Richardson.
 Sponsored by NCR's United Kingdom operations, the NCR Book Award is the only major award in Europe specifically for non-fiction works. It is also the most valuable single book prize in the United Kingdom, with a grand prize of 25,000 pounds (roughly $45,000 U.S.).
 The judges for the 1992 NCR Book Award are: Terrence Stamp, actor and author; Susannah Clapp, literary critic and journalist; Roy Foster, Carroll Professor of Irish history at Oxford; John Fowles, author of books including The French Lieutenant's Woman; and Francine Stock, host of BBC television's "Newsnight."
 The four finalists were selected from a record high entry of 156 books from 83 publishers and their imprints. Terrence Stamp, chairman of the judging panel, commented on the four finalists:
 "Michael Holroyd's concluding volume of Shaw finds George Bernard Shaw at the height of his evolvement. Enlightening from page one."
 "Wild Swans is that rare book which brings with it that hoped-for shiver of excitement when you realize you are embarking on uncharted territory; an eyewitness account of Mao's communism."
 "Fernandez-Armesto's story of Christopher Columbus is the best kind of historical biography -- scholarly, elegant and extremely readable."
 "John Richardson's portrait details the painter's first 25 years. We watch Picasso's style evolve from religious sentimentality through his pink and blue periods, working in a creative pack, until he shakes free to arrive at the brink of cubism."
 The winner of the NCR Book Award will be announced at The Savoy in England on May 21.
