FILTERTEK AND GELMAN SCIENCES ANNOUNCE FORMATION OF STRATEGIC ALLIANCE

 ANN ARBOR, Mich., Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Filtertek, Inc. (NYSE: FTK) of Hebron, Ill., and Gelman Sciences (AMEX: GSC) of Ann Arbor today announced the formation of a strategic alliance in pursuit of an evolving market for automotive vent devices. The strategic alliance involves a Gelman Sciences newly developed membrane material, moisture- resistant Versapor R. Versapor R is an oleophobic/hydrophobic membrane with outstanding resistance to moisture, fuels and oils used in transmission, engine and braking systems.
 Ronald Kay, president of Filtertek's North American Operations, indicated that "Filtertek believes this automotive vent application market will be a significant growth market over the next five years and that Filtertek's automotive device manufacturing and marketing strengths, combined with an exclusive position for Gelman Sciences' Versapor R, will position both companies to benefit from this market growth." Automotive vent applications would include uses in fuel systems, transmissions, electronic control modules, rear axles, headlights, anti-lock braking systems and power window/seat motors.
 Kim Davis, president and COO of Gelman Sciences, said, "We believe Versapor R has superior product performance, while remaining a cost- effective membrane to satisfy the design requirements of the automotive industry for vent applications. Our core business is in developing membrane materials, principally for healthcare, laboratory and high technology manufacturing process applications.
