FILM PROJECT IS HOT STUFF; Pupils' animation spreads Bonfire Night safety message.

Byline: Abby Alford

ANIMATION created by pupils which urges children to have fun safely at Halloween and on Bonfire Night is being screened across Cardiff.

The four-minute film created as part of the Operation Bang (Be A Nice Guy) campaign has been distributed to youth clubs and schools across the city and is also being shown on television screens on Cardiff Bus services and the big screen outside St David's Hall.

Year four pupils at St Mary the Virgin Church in Wales Primary School in Butetown, Cardiff, turned their hand to animation and voice-overs to produce the video, which includes subtitles in six languages.

Headteacher Ruth Jackson said: "The project has been a great way of combining the fun of Bonfire Night with the very important messages of keeping safe and acting sensibly.

"The children have had a fantastic time creating the DVD and we hope that others will enjoy watching it and remember to act responsibly."

South Wales Police Front Line Support Officer Andrew McCarthy, who covers Cardiff Central and Cardiff Bay, was the driving force behind the Operation Bang film.

Operation Bang is a joint police, council and fire service initiative.

Mr McCarthy said: "The DVD is aimed at educating children about the impact their behaviour can have on the wider community and advises how to stay safe.

"It is just one of the many ways we are trying to reduce anti-social behaviour over the Halloween and Bonfire Night period and keep everyone safe.

"The pupils at St Mary the Virgin School have created the storyline, come up with the characters and provided the voice-overs."

Cardiff's Safer Capital Partnership is getting ready for what has traditionally become one of the busiest times of the year.

With celebrations for Halloween and Bonfire Night fast approaching, a concerted effort is being undertaken by community safety partners including the police, council and fire service to reduce the number of incidents over this period.
