FILM INFORMATION COUNCIL (FIC) VOTES UNIVERSAL PICTURES'/AMBLIN'S 'JURASSIC PARK' THE EXCELLENCE IN FILM MARKETING AWARD FOR JUNE 1993

LOS ANGELES, July 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The Hollywood-based Film Information Council (FIC), a 33-year-old organization of marketing, public relations and promotion executives with vast experience and expertise in the marketing, exhibition and distribution of motion pictures, has voted Universal Pictures'/Amblin Entertainment's "Jurassic Park" its FIC Excellence in Film Marketing Award for the month of June 1993.
This is the first FIC win for Universal and Amblin since the organization started issuing monthly marketing acknowledgments to theatrical film distributors 10 months ago. Selected as the best marketed film during the month of June 1993, the FIC award will be presented to the marketing departments of Universal and Amblin. In making its determination, FIC acknowledged the marketing campaign of "Jurassic Park" to be as remarkable as the film itself, describing it as "a phenomenon that ranks with one of the best internationally marketed motion pictures of all time." FIC noted how "Jurassic Park's" logo of an open-mouthed dinosaur over the title became an icon across the world in a brief period and how three successive theater trailers were used from January to June to build awareness and anticipation of an event film opening in June. The use of powerful merchandising, strong promotional tie-ins and effective publicity use of cooperative and likeable stars all contributed further to make "Jurassic Park" one of the major movie events of the past decade. Also cited by FIC was the fortuitous timing of scientific organizations releasing news of new DNA research around the release date of the film.
Each month FIC Marketing Awards are announced for films opening during the previous month. By the end of 1993 the Marketing Awards will recognize the Best Marketed Film of the Year. Other previous FIC marketing winners have been TriStar's "Cliffhanger" in May, Paramount Pictures' "Indecent Proposal" in April, New Line Cinema's "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" in March; Columbia Pictures' "Groundhog Day" for February; Miramax Films' "The Crying Game" for January; Columbia Pictures/Castle Rock's "A Few Good Men" for December; Warner Bros.' "Malcom X" for November; Columbia Pictures' "A River Runs Through It" for October and 20th Century Fox's "Last of the Mohicans" for September.
FIC was formed in 1960 as an informal group of movie marketing executives who met monthly to discuss matters relating to their trade. The organization conducted film marketing seminars at USC from 1978-84.
The roster of FIC members past and present includes some of the most celebrated names in film marketing. Today the organization is a vivid cross section of experienced movie marketing executives versed in marketing, distribution, advertising, promotion, publicity, exhibition and agency work. FIC members have contributed their talents and marketing expertise on more than 10,000 films. FIC's executive chairman is Richard Kahn. Awards chairman are Rusty Citron and Rick Markovitz.
