FILM INFORMATION COUNCIL (FIC) VOTES BUENA VISTA'S 'THE JOY LUCK CLUB' ITS BEST MARKETED FILM AWARD FOR THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The Hollywood-based Film Information Council (FIC), a 33-year-old organization of marketing, public relations and promotion executives with vast experience and expertise in the marketing, exhibition and distribution of motion pictures, has voted Buena Vista Pictures Distribution Co. its FIC Excellence in Film Marketing Award for the month of September 1993 for the motion picture "The Joy Luck Club."
This is the first win for Buena Vista since FIC started issuing monthly marketing acknowledgments to theatrical film distributors 13 months ago. The FIC award will be presented to the marketing department of Buena Vista, headed by Bob Levin, president of Worldwide Marketing.
FIC was particularly impressed with Buena Vista's careful nurturing of a difficult film, opening on a platform basis first in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco and slowly widening. FIC was also aware that this was a film that was able to create wide audience appeal with no name American stars. FIC also cited how Buena Vista created effective exposure for the film through timely screenings, with stars present, at major film festivals across the United States and in some foreign countries.
Each month FIC Marketing Awards are announced for films opening during the previous month. On Feb. 2, 1994, at Ma Maison Restaurant, Los Angeles, FIC will host an awards luncheon to recognize the Best Marketed Film of 1993
Other previous FIC marketing winners have been Warner Bros.' "The Fugitive" and "Free Willy," Universal/Amblin's "Jurassic Park" in June; TriStar's "Cliffhanger" in May; Paramount Pictures' "Indecent Proposal" in April; New Lines Cinema's "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" in March; Columbia Pictures' "Groundhog Day" for February; Miramax Films' "The Crying Game" for January, Columbia Pictures/Castle Rock's "A Few Good Men" for December; Columbia Pictures' "A River Runs Through It" for October and 20th Century Fox's "Last of the Mohicans" for September, 1992, the first month of the awards.
"The Joy Luck Club" is a Hollywood Pictures Presentation of an Oliver Stone Production in association with Rachel Portman. It is directed by Wayne Wang. Executive producers are Oliver Stone, Janet Yang. Producers are Wang, Amy Tan, Ronald Bass and Patrick Markey. Screenplay is by Tan and Bass and it is based on the novel by Tan.
FIC was formed in 1960 as an informal group of movie marketing executives who met monthly to discuss matters relating to their trade. The organization conducted film marketing seminars at USC from 1978-84.
The roster of FIC members past and present includes some of the most celebrated names in film marketing. Today the organization is a vivid cross section of experienced movie marketing executives, versed in marketing, distribution, advertising, promotion, publicity, exhibition and agency work.
