FIFTH ANNUAL DESIGN COMPETITION AWARDS PRIZES

RADNOR, Pa., Sept. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Winning entries in Design '93, the Fifth Annual Design Award competition, will be announced at an awards ceremony slated for Tuesday, Sept. 28, at the Moscone Convention Center, San Francisco.
The contest, which honors engineers for creativity in design, is sponsored by Electronic Component News (ECN) magazine and Accel Technologies of San Diego.
First prize, $5,000 in cash plus Accel computer software packages (valued at $11,950), will be awarded to DiaSystems Electronics of Chandler, Ariz., for their product "Radio Informer." The system, intended to replace the current realtor practice of supplying leaflets to interested drive-by customers, allows passing automobile traffic to access a pre-recorded voice message using a clear frequency on their car radio.
Second prize, $2,000 in cash plus Accel computer software packages (valued at $10,950), will be awarded to Forrest M. Mims III of Seguin, Texas, for the "Total Ozone Portable Spectroradiometer (TOPS)." TOPS, an inexpensive, hand-held ozonometer, is used by weather observers and meteorologists to monitor total ozone and solar ultraviolet-B levels contained in a specific segment of the atmosphere. It demonstrates that a significant measurement need can be fulfilled using a relatively simple instrument design.
Third prize is an Accel computer software package (valued at $5,950), and will be presented to CVP Products of Richardson, Texas. Their prize-winning product, "Railcommand," is designed for the serious model railroading hobbyist, providing a simple method for the control of multiple model locomotives to function, using just two wires. The Railcommand System is also available as an electronic kit, appealing to the ardent hobbyist who prefers building their own kits.
"ECN salutes its partner, Accel Technologies, for providing these significant prizes," said Hy Natkin, editor-in-chief. "Their support of this competition is commendable. Design '93 is important," he continued, "because it encourages and recognizes creativity in design, and gives engineers an excellent opportunity to bring their ideas before a panel of industry experts."
Accel Technologies is a world-class provider of software tools for the design needs of engineering professionals.
ECN, a Chilton Company publication, is the leading monthly product news magazine which serves more than 125,000 design engineers, engineering management and other electronics purchasers of equipment, subsystems, components and software in the electronics original equipment market.
