FIFA'S 90-day suspension of Michel Platini is under renewed fire after the South American confederation called for him to be allowed to continue to run for the FIFA presidency.

CONMEBOL, which represents South American football, said Platini was innocent until proved guilty. And the French football federation is planning to go to the Court of Arbitration for Sport to argue that their candidate be allowed to continue.

Platini lodged his appeal against the ban with FIFA's appeal committee yesterday.

Platini and Sepp Blatter (right) were both suspended for 90 days while the ethics committee investigates a PS1.35million payment to the UEFA president from FIFA in 2011, for work apparently carried out more than nine years beforehand.

presid foc The ban effectively prevents Platini from taking part in the t election to succeed Blatter on February 26. Nominations close on October 26, though there will be pressure at an emergency FIFA meting on October 20 to postpone the election.

A statement from CONMEBOL said: "The confederation does not agree with the decision provisionally banning FIFA presidential candidate Mr Michel Platini from all football-related activities.

"It is imperative that sporting justice continues its course in order to clarify all of the facts as soon and definitely as possible. At the same time the presumption of innocence is a fundamental right that has to be considered."
