 FIELDS NAMES LAWRENCE PRESIDENT & COO OF UNITED OF FLORIDA;
 TODD TO ASSUME DUTIES AS CHAIRMAN & CEO OF THE COMPANY
 KANSAS CITY, Mo., Feb. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Curtis G. Fields, president of Sprint/United's Local Telecommunications Division, announced today that Fred D. Lawrence has been named president and chief operating officer of United Telephone Company of Florida, effective March 1. This action was taken today at United Telephone of Florida's quarterly board of directors meeting.
 Lawrence, senior vice president for the corporation's Local Telecommunications Division and a 22-year veteran of the industry, replaces Troy W. Todd, who has been named chairman and chief executive officer of United Telephone of Florida. Todd has served as president of United of Florida since 1982.
 "Troy Todd has established for United of Florida a standard of quality, based on an unyielding commitment to customer satisfaction and visionary technological improvements," Fields said. "We're particularly pleased to have a man of Fred Lawrence's experience and talent to build upon that standard in the years ahead."
 As president and chief operating officer, Lawrence assumes responsibility for all of the operations at United Telephone of Florida, the largest of the corporation's seven local telephone groups, which will identify themselves as Sprint companies in line with the impending parent company name change from United Telecommunications to Sprint.
 From 1986 to 1989, Lawrence was executive vice president for Sprint's Long Distance Division where he was responsible for the planning, construction and operation of the first, and only, nationwide all-digital, fiber-optic network. Since 1989, Lawrence, 43, has been responsible for Local Telecommunications Division staff functions in Engineering and Operations, Marketing and Revenues, as well as for DirectoriesAmerica, which will change its name to Sprint Publishing & Advertising.
 After receiving an electrical engineering degree from Western Michigan University, Lawrence began his telephony career at Michigan Bell in 1970. In 1982, he joined United Telecom as vice president of Engineering and Operations. A year later, Lawrence was named vice president of Operations for United Telephone's Midwest Group before assuming responsibility for building the Sprint network.
 United Telecom, headquartered in Kansas City, is a diversified international telecommunications company. Its principal business units are the Sprint Long Distance Division, which provides a comprehensive array of global voice, data and video communications products and services; the Local Telecommunications Division, which serves more than 4 million subscribers in 17 states; North Supply and DirectoriesAmerica.
