FIEDLER APPOINTED VICE PRESIDENT, INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY SONY CORPORATION OF AMERICA

NEW YORK, Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Corporation of America today announced that James N. Fiedler has been named vice president, effective immediately. Mr. Fiedler will oversee all aspects of Sony's U.S. intellectual property department. He will also continue as president and chief executive officer, Sony Dynamic Digital Sound, Inc.
"Jim will provide key support in expanding and strengthening the patent portfolio of Sony's U.S. companies," said Michael P. Schulhof, president and chief executive officer, Sony Corporation of America. "He will spearhead the licensing of Sony technology in the United States."
Mr. Fiedler is a graduate of UCLA (B.A., 1961), UCLA Law School (J.D., 1964), and Pepperdine University (M.B.A., 1985). Prior to joining Sony in 1992 as president of its Dynamic Digital Sound unit, Mr. Fiedler was a vice president of MCA, Inc. and president of DiscoVision Associates, a joint venture between MCA and IBM Corporation. He also previously served as senior vice president of International Rectifier Corporation.
Mr. Fiedler has extensive experience in the development of internationally-based businesses concentrating on the expansion of new, leading-edge technologies, and in the successful prosecution and licensing of patents and technology.
Most recently, Mr. Fiedler has worked closely with Sony engineers and Sony Pictures Entertainment personnel in developing Sony Dynamic Digital Sound(TM), a new digital sound system to be introduced into motion picture theaters throughout the world in 1994. The SDDS(TM) system provides film directors and exhibitors with up to eight discrete, full-frequency channels of digital sound, optically recorded on film, each capable of delivering discretely programmed parts of a motion picture's soundtrack. The effect results in an enhanced cinematic environment that draws audiences into the magic of film.
Sony, which had 1993 U.S. sales of $10.5 billion, has more than 20,000 U.S. employees, and its U.S.-based companies employ an additional 10,000 people worldwide.
