FIDELITY INTRODUCES EDUCATIONAL SOFTWARE

BOSTON, July 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Fidelity Investments, a leading manager of retirement plans, today introduced STAGES Strategy Selector(tm), an educational software program designed to help people determine their financial needs in retirement and to show how various investment strategies can affect their ability to reach their financial goals. STAGES Strategy Selector is part of Fidelity's STAGES Communications Program for employees of its defined contribution clients.
STAGES Strategy Selector is an innovative, animated, and easy-to-use IBM-pc based program designed to show people how much they'll need to save to reach their retirement goal and how to go about reaching that goal. The program contains modules explaining investment basics, the importance of diversification, how to calculate a retirement nest egg and how to put together a savings and investment plan. The sponsoring company can choose to have the program tailored to reflect its own plan specifics.
"Retirement planning software is one of the most popular employee education tools in the market today. However, we think the real test of its effectiveness is not simply its popularity, but how employees value its usefulness," said Robert Reynolds, president of Fidelity's 401(k) business. "STAGES Strategy Selector passed rigorous field tests. More than 85 percent of the employees surveyed at one client company said they agreed that Strategy Selector is a helpful tool for retirement planning."
STAGES Strategy Selector is part of Fidelity's STAGES Communications Program which provides ongoing financial education and planning tools for 401(k) and other defined contribution participants. The STAGES Program derived its name from the fact that it approaches the education of people in stages, according to their level of sophistication and need. It also teaches people to view saving and money management according to the stage of life they're in.
"Research showed us that employees need to see how the 401(k) plan is relevant to their current rather than their long-term financial needs," said Andi Pollinger, vice president and publisher of STAGES(R) Magazine. "Our program is designed to help employees overcome the barriers that prevent them from taking advantage of their company's plan by giving them educational tools that emphasize practical approaches to investing for the long-term."
The STAGES Communications Program was launched in March, 1992, with the introduction of STAGES Magazine, a quarterly publication created to help companies educate their employees about personal finance issues. The magazine is now delivered to the homes of 1.4 million employees in Fidelity sponsored plans, and won the International Association of Business Communicators' Silver Quill Award for excellence in employee communications after only two issues. In addition to the magazine and the new software, Fidelity's STAGES Communications Program includes a series of brochures called Investment Basics, which help employees become comfortable with investment terminology, and STAGES Guide To Retirement Planning.
Fidelity Investments, the nation's largest mutual fund company, manages over $220 billion in assets, $40 billion of which are 401(k) and other defined contribution assets.
