FIBRONICS INTRODUCES SERVER THAT CONNECTS WORKSTATIONS DIRECTLY TO FDDI;
 SERVER REDUCES COST/CONNECTION AND IMPROVES NETWORK PERFORMANCE
 HYANNIS, Mass., Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Fibronics International Inc. (NASDAQ: FBRX) today announced the availability of the FX8610 Workstation Server that connects up to 48 workstations directly to an FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface) network. The FX8610 reduces the cost of direct FDDI connections and significantly improves network performance.
 "The Workstation Server complements our FDDI bridges and routers as it provides the most cost-effective connection of servers to the FDDI with the best overall throughput available today," said Dr. Joseph Garodnick, corporate vice president for Fibronics. "The FX8610 enables users to connect their workstations to a high-performance FDDI network at a fraction of the cost of other available options."
 The FX8610 is a modular, multi-port 10BaseT concentrator/translation bridge to FDDI that provides faster access speed by offering extremely low transient delays, thereby enhancing network efficiency and increasing network bandwidth, reliability and availability. Featuring a collisionless 10BaseT Ethernet connection from each workstation to the FX8610 and advanced circuitry and software, Fibronics' new server allows up to 60Mbps of throughput between the FDDI network and the workstations. Each workstation connected to the FX8610 can also communicate with other workstations on the Ethernet network at a full 10 Mbps.
 In beta tests of the Workstation Server at the National Institute for Information and Computerization Research for France (INRIA) located in Rocquencourt (near Paris), the Workstation Server successfully provided increased throughput and improved response to workgroups consisting of high-performance workstations, servers, PCs and laser printers.
 The FX8610 has also proven successful in beta tests at Motorola Corporation of Tel Aviv where it is implemented on a high-speed FDDI network in conjunction with Fibronics' FDDI translation bridges and 70 attatched workstations.
 In addition, the Server will be part of the equipment offered by France Telecom for on-premises backbone networks and Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) applications. Fibronics has been chosen by the French P.T.T., France Telecom, to be its FDDI vendor for France. As the primary provider of telecommunications services in one of Europe's most technologically progressive nations, France Telecom offers a wide range of ISDN and intelligent public network solutions to the country's largest businesses and government institutions.
 "The FX8610 offers high performance and a tremendous price-per-port advantage over FDDI concentrators and single-attached FDDI interfaces," said Bill Panepinto, director of marketing for Fibronics. "The lowest-priced FDDI direct-attach board is about $6,000, excluding the cost of the required concentrator. Because each workstation portion of the concentrator is about $1,200, the actual costs of a direct-attach device is $7,200. In contrast, the price-per-port of our server is only $2,400 in a 12-port configuration and only $700 in a 48-port configuration, an affordable price for our customers."
 When placed as a node on an FDDI network and used in conjunction with other System FINEX products, the FX8610 can provide access to servers on the FDDI and remote LANs. When used with Fibronics' KNET TCP/IP Network Software, the FX8610 provides a complete solution for workstation access to applications and data residing on IBM mainframes. The FX8610 can also be implemented in stand-alone configurations (without the use of an FDDI ring) to serve as a workgroup communications server.
 The new addition to the Fibronics System FINEX family of products is specifically designed for customers with a large concentration of high-end workstations or personal computers that need additional performance but do not want to pay the high costs of direct-attach FDDI boards and concentrators. It is also an ideal solution for widely used high-performance workstations and workgroups that use network intensive applications such as X Windows, Client/Server relations and CAD/CAM.
 The FX8610 Workstation Server is easy to install and priced between $19,000 to $29,000, depending on the unit's final configuration. Production shipments are scheduled to begin in November.
