REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Sept. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- VeriFone, Inc. (NASDAQ: VFIC), a leading worldwide supplier of Transaction Automation system solutions, today announced that FFP Operating Partners, L.P. (AMEX: FFP) has selected VeriFone's Gemstone(R) Ruby SuperSystem as the point-of-sale (POS) platform for its 130 convenience stores in the Southwestern United States. Pilot installations are planned for the fourth quarter of this year.
The Ruby SuperSystem is a fully-integrated solution for service stations and convenience stores that combines the functionality of a credit and debit payment system, electronic cash register (ECR), and fuel pump controller. Ruby's key competitive advantage is price/performance. Priced at under $3,500 in volume, the system costs less than half as much as competitive integrated systems with equivalent functionality. Ruby can interface with fuel dispensers from three leading manufacturers: Dresser-Wayne, Gilbarco and Tokheim. This enables convenience store and service station operators with multiple pump brands to standardize on a single integrated solution.
"FFP is leading the move towards increased integration at the point of sale," said John Harvison, chairman of FFP. "VeriFone's Ruby SuperSystem gives us the functionality we need to automate store operations -- credit and debit card transactions, the ECR, fuel pump control, Statistical Information Reports (SIR), money orders, and even payroll -- in a single, compact POS device. Ruby is also very easy to learn and operate, which is essential for high-turnover environments like convenience stores. VeriFone's industry leadership and reputation for service and support were factors in our selection as well. We know VeriFone will be there when we need them."
 Complete Store Management
FFP has developed application software that automates many aspects of convenience store operation beyond payment processing and fuel pump control. Designed to run on VeriFone's OMNI(TM) 480 and 490 transaction systems, these applications are being modified to operate on the Ruby SuperSystem as well. They include:
-- Statistical Information Report Submission -- This application enables store managers to enter SIR data into the VeriFone system and transmit it over phone lines to FFP's central computer.
-- Money Orders -- Instead of using preprinted, prenumbered forms, FFP convenience stores print money orders using high-resolution laser printers. This solution saves the cost of the preprinted forms and ensures accuracy.
-- On-Site Payroll Check Production -- Payroll checks for convenience store employees are printed on-site. On payday, FFP's central computer electronically transmits payroll data to the VeriFone system at each store. The store manager activates printing by entering a security code into the VeriFone system. This approach saves time as well as the considerable expense of courier services.
-- Store Forms -- A variety of store forms, such as merchandise return slips, are stored in the VeriFone system and printed on an as- needed basis, eliminating clutter at the point of sale.
