FERREN BECOMES SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT, CREATIVE TECHNOLOGY, FOR WALT DISNEY IMAGINEERING

GLENDALE, Calif., March 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Bran Ferren, a nationally recognized award-winning designer/technologist, has joined Walt Disney Imagineering in the new position of senior vice president, creative technology.
Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI) is the master planning, creative development, design, engineering, production and project management subsidiary of The Walt Disney Co., responsible for the creation of the Disney Theme Parks and their expansion.
Imagineering President Martin Sklar and Executive Vice President Mickey Steinberg said Ferren's job will be to work with both the WDI creative and technical teams to guide the invention, development and application of creative technology. His responsibilities will include a broad range of assignments, extending beyond WDI to all groups within the Disney organization; acting as liaison between WDI and other Disney groups to increase communications, corporate synergy and new business relationships; and to seek out future technologies that could have strategic value to the organization. He will report directly to Steinberg.
A three-time Academy Award winner for advanced special effects technology, Ferren has worked in theater, film, music, architecture and the sciences. A native New Yorker, he is the son of the late abstract expressionist painter John Ferren. He has been a consultant to WDI for the past three years while heading his own firm, Associates & Ferren, of East Hampton, Long Island, N.Y., which he established in 1976.
Sklar and Steinberg said that Ferren will "help bridge the creative and technical worlds. The rate at which new technologies are becoming available to merge with our creative product is increasing dramatically. Successfully combining these diverse skills and disciplines is essential to maintaining our international leadership role."
Ferren's Long Island project team, they added, "will provide an East Coast-based expansion of our R&D capabilities and a new resource for the design, engineering and/or construction of projects, full- scale prototypes and proof-of-principle models for both WDI and others."
Ferren's work has included designing a marine science museum in Baltimore Harbor due to open in 1995, providing special effects systems for a world tour by singer Paul McCartney, visual effects for an ABC News magazine series, "Day One," and a traveling multimedia exhibit of the Bill of Rights on a 200th anniversary tour across the United States. Among his credits are the staging and special effects for many Broadway productions, including "Evita," "Cats" and "Sunday in the Park with George." Ferren has also been responsible for some of the most spectacular visual effects work in the industry as seen in films like "Altered States," "Little Shop of Horrors," "Star Trek V The Final Frontier" and a soon-to-be-released Sidney Lumet film for Hollywood Pictures, "Beyond Innocence."
In related developments, it was announced that David Kerschner was appointed a vice president to manage the WDI Long Island research and development operation, in addition to a smaller Florida-based WDI R&D staff. Kerschner, who had been Imagineering's director of project/division finance, will relocate to the East Coast. He will be replaced by Tom Park, who becomes WDI's director of finance and controller.
