FEMA FINDS MOBILE HOMES CAN ASSIST
EFFORT TO AID HOMELESS HURRICANE VICTIMS
MIAMI, Sept. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobile homes can assist the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to house some of the victims of Hurricane Andrew in Dade, Broward, Collier and Monroe Counties, according to Phil May, federal coordinating officer.
The mobile homes are being hauled to this area from storage centers in Atlanta, Ga.; Palo Pinto, Texas; and Richmond, Ky., May said. A total of 200 already have arrived at a FEMA staging site in the Miami area. More are arriving daily, and will begin moving to designated locations as Corps of Engineers' debris-clearing operations enable the equipment to be installed on safe, utility-equipped pads.
A total of 14 mobile homes have been installed on pads thus far, May stated, and four are currently ready for occupancy.
"We will first attempt to find suitable, available and accessible permanent apartments for applicants," May said. "Preplacement interviews will enable us to determine individual needs and to match their requirements with available
facilities. Availability of mobile homes will increase our planning flexibility," he added.
The mobile homes offer occupants three bedrooms and one bathroom. They measure 12 feet wide and vary in length from 60 to 64 feet long. FEMA-assigned housing site inspectors insure the trailers are installed and anchored on appropriate pads with required electrical, water and sewage facilities.
