FEDERAL MEDICARE SPENDING INCREASED, ACCORDING TO HCFA
WASHINGTON, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Spending on the federal Medicare program increased from $109.7 billion in FY 1990 to $117.8 billion in 1991, a growth rate of 7.4 percent, according to William Toby, Jr., acting administrator of the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA).
The number of Medicare beneficiaries totaled 34.9 million in FY 1991, an increase of 1.9 percent from the 34.2 million beneficiaries in 1990.
The volume of claims submitted to Medicare by health care providers increased nearly 11 percent in FY 1991 to reach almost 600 million. This is approximately 59 million more than the number of bills submitted to Medicare in FY 1990.
The Health Care Financing Administration administers the Medicare program for the elderly and disabled and provides matching funds for the state-administered Medicaid programs for the poor. The programs in 1992 are serving more than 60 million Americans. HCFA's estimated 1992 expenditures of $204 billion are the 12th largest government budget of any kind in the world.
