 FEDERAL EXPRESS ANNOUNCES PROMOTIONS
 MEMPHIS, Tenn., Nov. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Federal Express Corporation


(NYSE: FDX) today announced the promotions of Kenneth R. Newell to senior vice president-Europe, Mediterranean and Africa, and Joseph R. McCarty to senior vice president-Asia, Pacific and Middle East.
 Newell has been vice president-United Kingdom and Ireland since 1990. McCarty has been vice president-legal since 1987.
 Both will report to Thomas R. Oliver, recently named executive vice president-worldwide customer operations. Their appointments are effective Nov. 1. Also reporting to Oliver will be Jeffrey R. Rodek, senior vice president-North and South America, as well as the three senior officers responsible for sales and customer services, business logistics services and sort operations. The three regional senior vice presidents are responsible for planning, organizing and implementing corporate strategies and operations in their respective areas.
 Newell joined Federal Express as a customer service manager in 1975. He was promoted to director in 1978 and to vice president-business service operations and sales in 1983. In 1987 he was named vice president-Central Region ground operations, a position he held until assuming his responsibilities in the United Kingdom.
 McCarty joined the company in 1983, as a vice president in the legal department, and served as vice president for properties and facilities in 1984, rejoining the legal department in 1987 as vice president for international legal activities.
 Rodek has been senior vice president-U.S. and Canada since August, and will add Latin America to his responsibilities in this reorganization and strengthening of Federal Express' worldwide presence.
