FEDERAL EXPRESS ANNOUNCES B727 STAGE 3 NOISE
REDUCTION KIT ORDER FROM DELTA AIRLINES
MEMPHIS, Aug. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Federal Express Corporation (NYSE: FDX) announced today that Delta Air Lines Inc. (NYSE: DAL) has placed an order for the light-takeoff-weight version of Federal Express' Stage 3 noise reduction kits for installation on Boeing 727-200 aircraft for its Northeast Shuttle operation. The Federal Express Stage 3 Kits will reduce cumulative takeoff, sideline and approach noise by more than 9 dB per aircraft from the Stage 2 B727-200 configuration.
Delta's order will be delivered between November 1992 and May 1993. The order was placed through Federal Express Aviation Services, Inc. ("FEASI"), Federal Express' aviation marketing subsidiary.
"We are extremely pleased that Delta Air Lines has placed its confidence in the Federal Express Stage 3 Kit to help it meet the new U.S. noise rules and extend the life of its B727-200 shuttle fleet," said Phil Blum, FEASI's manager of marketing and analysis.
Federal Express also announced that FEASI sold two Stage 3 kits to European Air Transport in May and one Stage 3 kit to a Saudi Arabian corporate operator in June. These orders bring the total firm orders for the Federal Express Stage 3 kit to 73, of which 60 have now been delivered, including 35 to Federal Express.
The Federal Express Stage 3 kits incorporate "state-of-the-art" noise reduction technologies, which significantly reduce exhaust and fan noise to bring the Boeing 727 aircraft into compliance with the recently mandated, and more stringent, "Stage 3" noise standards. The kits have been developed by Federal Express' engineering group in collaboration with United Technologies' Pratt & Whitney, the builder of the JT8D model engines on the Boeing 727.
"Pratt & Whitney is gratified by Delta's decision to extend its commitment to its JT8D powered B727-200s using the light-takeoff-weight version of the Federal Express Stage 3 kit," said Mike Gifford, Pratt & Whitney's JT8D business manager. "Installing the kits is the most cost- effective way to meet the new noise laws," Gifford added.
