FEDERAL COURT ENJOINS COSTAIN SALE

NEW YORK, Dec. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Hanson Industries, the U.S. arm of Hanson PLC (NYSE: HAN), confirmed today that its Peabody Holding Company, Inc. unit obtained a preliminary injunction (from The Honorable Stephen N. Limbaugh, United States District Judge for the Eastern District of Missouri) against Costain Group PLC. The injunction prohibits Costain Group from proceeding with the proposed sale of its Australian coal assets to Altus Finance, S.A., a 66 percent controlled unit of Credit Lyonnais. Costain previously had contracted to sell such coal assets to an affiliate of Peabody. The court also ordered a trial for a permanent injunction to commence on Jan. 19, 1993.
Immediately following the court's ruling at 4:00 P.M. (CST) on Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1992, the Costain Group filed an appeal and has requested expedited consideration.
