FEBRUARY SALES INCREASE 4.5 PERCENT FOR THE MAY DEPARTMENT STORES COMPANY

 ST. LOUIS, March 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The May Department Stores Company (NYSE: MA) today reported preliminary sales of $634.1 million for the four-week period ended Feb. 27, up 4.5 percent from sales of $606.7 million during the same period last year. The February reporting period is the first month of fiscal 1993 for May.
 Department store sales for February were $520.9 million, up 4.2 percent or $21.0 million from last year. Sales for Payless ShoeSource totaled $113.2 million, an increase of 6.0 percent or $6.4 million from sales in the similar period last year.

 (A) Store-for-store sales represent sales of those stores open during both years.
 Sales have been restated to exclude the sales of stores which have been closed and not replaced. Total revenues, including sales of nonreplaced closed stores and finance charge revenue, were $663 million in February 1993 and $661 million in February 1992.
 The May Department Stores Company is the largest department store retailer in the United States, operating 303 department stores and 3,558 Payless ShoeSource stores.
