FDA orders seizure of Cosmic Carabao Gin products.

By Analou De Vera

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Tuesday has ordered the seizure and confiscation of all 'Cosmic Carabao Gin' products in the market after the product was found to contain "high level of methanol."

"In the interest of public protection, the Field Regulatory Operations Office inspectors and Regulatory Enforcement Unit officers of FDA shall seize and/or confiscate all Cosmic Carabao Gin products available in the market," the FDA said in its advisory.

"[FDA Authorities are] hereby ordered to conduct sealing of all raw materials, including in-process distillates, and seizure of all unregistered Cosmic Carabao Gin in the manufacturing facility of Juan Brewing Inc., and all those that are offered for sale in the market," a separate advisory said.

A woman reportedly died after taking the drink. Another woman was hospitalized.

"The FDA hereby warns the public on the consumption of the implicated product as this is currently unregistered and has been confirmed to contain a high level of methanol," the agency warned.

Methanol is a "widely available chemical that has many industrial applications and is also found in household products and fuel for aircraft," the FDA said.

Non-toxic trace amounts of methanol is also present in fruit juices as a product of natural fermentation and found in both alcoholic and non-alcoholic fermented beverages.

"Higher concentrations of methanol in alcoholic drinks can happen when methanol is deliberately added to alcoholic drinks," the FDA noted.

The agency said symptoms of methanol poisoning include headache, vomiting, abdominal pain, hyperventilation, and feeling of breathlessness. In severe cases, blindness may occur.

The FDA also warned the public against the consumption of unregistered food products.

"Consumers must also exercise extreme caution in buying alcoholic drinks, especially those that do not have labels, poorly printed labels or with broken seals," it said.
