FDA ISSUES BREAST IMPLANT HOTLINE UPDATE
 WASHINGTON, Feb. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- FDA's Breast Implant

Information Line is available to those who are hearing impaired by calling TT 800-688-6167. The general information line is 800-532-4440. More than 11,000 calls were received during the first five days of operation, through Feb. 24.
The Breast Implant Information Line was set up to provide women with accurate, up-to-date information on breast implants and the recommendations of FDA's advisory panel that met Feb. 18-20. Information concerning the agency's final decision on continued availability of the implants will be provided once that decision is made.
The number of phone lines and specialists available to answer the calls has been increased in order to handle more efficiently the large volume of calls being received. Callers are urged to keep trying if they get a busy signal the first time they call. The line is staffed Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-7 p.m. EST. Callers wishing to receive written information only may call after hours and leave their name and address on a recorder.
The questions asked most often so far have been about how to detect implant ruptures. Callers are informed that there is a range of symptoms that may signal rupture, including changes in breast contour and sensation. However, symptoms may vary from woman to woman. Women are encouraged to discuss any concerns they have with their physician and to see their physician regularly for as long as their implants are in place.
