FDA CLEARS NEW MEDTRONIC ANGIOPLASTY CATHETER FEATURING 'FRONT-WHEEL DRIVE'

MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Medtronic, Inc. (NYSE: MDT) announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has cleared commercial release of its new Spirit(TM) balloon catheter for coronary angioplasty.
The Spirit incorporates a major innovation in catheter design: the inner channel, or lumen, which runs over the .014 inch guidewire, extends all the way to the distal tip. This feature, combined with the action of the Spirit's spring-coil construction, is designed to give the physician precise control and superior maneuverability of the catheter as it moves through the coronary
artery. A second lumen transmits fluid that expands the balloon, thereby opening arteries partially blocked by plaque. The outer bipolymer coaxial lumen is constructed of two types of polymer material to further provide optimal support and flexibility.
Jon Tremmel, vice president and general manager of Medtronic's Interventional Vascular business, noted that, "The Spirit is the first angioplasty catheter with 'front-wheel drive'. Now, in effect, the interventional cardiologist can 'pull' the catheter across a lesion, rather that pushing a catheter employing a guidewire that ends behind the balloon."
Spirit catheters also incorporate a new protective sleeve that reinforces the wrapped profile of the balloon during shipment and storage. This "memory" aids the balloon's ability to rewrap after inflation, thereby facilitating recrossing and repositioning for subsequent inflations.
The Spirit joins the Medtronic 14K(R) and 18K(R) balloon catheters in the product line of Medtronic Interventional Medical, San Diego.
Medtronic, Inc., headquartered in Minneapolis, is the world's leading therapeutic medical device company.
