FARM WORKER SCHOOL CHILDREN TO RECEIVE VISIT FROM FEDERAL WATER OFFICIAL
FIVE POINTS, Calif., March 9 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. Bureau of Reclamation Commissioner Dennis B. Underwood will visit Westside Elementary School children in the tiny Central Valley farming community of Five Points. The commissioner will address an assembly of students, teachers and parents to discuss the economic impact of federal policies on their community. The children recently wrote numerous letters to President George Bush about their fears that federal water actions against farmers are jeopardizing their parents' farm jobs. Underwood will be at Westside Elementary School, 19191 Excelsior Ave. in Five Points, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Monday, March 9.
The Bureau of Reclamation's decision to dramatically reduce water deliveries to Central Valley farms this year follows on the heels of significant cutbacks in the previous two years that have barely allowed farmers to survive. The childrens' letters told the president that many jobs would be lost unless the bureau's decision to completely cutoff or significantly curtail water deliveries again this year was reconsidered. "Our parents work every day for us ... can you imagine them losing the jobs they worked so hard for?" wrote 8th grade student Susana Gonzalez.
"The plight of farmers and farm workers here in the valley has finally caught the attention of the White House and other federal officials back in Washington," said Julie Diener, Westside Elementary's sixth grade teacher. "These kids are coming to school each worried that their parents have lost or may soon lose their jobs."
Directions: Five Points is located 43 miles southwest of Fresno in the San Joaquin Valley. From Interstate 5, use Highway 145 East- Coalinga Road exit. Westside Elementary is located near the intersection of Highway 145 and Excelsior Avenue roughly seven miles from Interstate 5.
