FAR EASTERN AIR TRANSPORT ORDERS THIRD MD-80

FAR EASTERN AIR TRANSPORT ORDERS THIRD MD-80
LONG BEACH, Calif., Jan. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Far Eastern Air

Transport has ordered a third McDonnell Douglas (NYSE: MD) MD-80 twin jet airliner to meet growing need for its passenger service in the Republic of China.
The Taipei-based carrier currently operates two similar aircraft delivered last year. They fly routes linking the capital with other major Taiwan cities, including a Taipei-Kaohsiung shuttle service.
The new aircraft is an MD-82 model with two Pratt & Whitney JT8D-219 engines rated at 21,000 pounds of takeoff thrust.
The new plane will be delivered from the Douglas Aircraft Co. factory here in mid-February. It will provide added capacity to meet present demand and allow for continued traffic growth. The airline's first two MD-80s regularly operate with 85 percent load factors, said Richard E. Jones, Asia-Pacific area marketing manager for McDonnell Douglas.
The MD-80 is fitted with 143 seats in a two-class arrangement, eight in first class and 135 in economy. As in all McDonnell Douglas twin jets, the economy seats are in the five- abreast arrangement most popular with travelers around the world. The aircraft also is equipped with an Omega inertial navigation system.
