FAO names its representative in Kyrgyz Republic.

The appointment of Dr. Dorjee Kinlay as FAO Representative in the Kyrgyz Republic became official this week. Kinlay was initially seconded to Bishkek from FAO headquarters in Rome in October 2012 - as FAO Representative Designate until the signing of the Host Country Agreement between FAO and the Government which had been expected by the end of 2012, allowing formal appointment in early 2013. This process was delayed, however, for FAO and other United Nations organizations.

A national of Bhutan, Kinlay holds a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. His diplomatic and professional career has included assignments with the Ministry of Agriculture, Royal Government of Bhutan, a period as World Wildlife Fund Representative and concurrently Honorary Executive Director of the Royal Society for the Protection of Nature in Bhutan.

His career with FAO began in 2000 with an assignment as economist and Deputy Secretary of the Committee on World Food Security, in the Agricultural Development Economics Division at the Organization's headquarters in Rome, followed with the post of economist at the Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific and Secretary of the Regional Conference for Asia and the Pacific. Immediately prior to his assignment to Kyrgyzstan, Kinlay served again as economist with the Agricultural Development Economics Division in Rome.

Throughout his career, Kinlay has dealt with issues of policy and practical implementation in food security and agricultural development.

"Being a person who grew up on a farm, and still has close ties to it, I feel this Organization is where I belong," he said. "I was glad to get back to the field of agriculture and food security after my stint with a conservation NGO. We have a vital role to play in a country like Kyrgyzstan, which values the expertise and the mandate of FAO."
