FAO SCHWARZ EXPANDS COMMITMENT TO EDUCATION WITH OPENING OF "BOOKMONSTER" NEW YORK, Oct. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- FAO Schwarz, the nation's "ultimate toy store," today unveils their expanded book department, "BOOKMONSTER." Visitors of all ages are greeted by a reptilian theme as two gigantic floor-to-ceiling dinosaur legs invite shoppers into a lair showcasing the very best in children's literature. "There really is no comparison between "BOOKMONSTER" and what the department was before. One of the main reasons for the expansion is that parents are spending more interactive time with their children," explained John Eyler, president and CEO of FAO Schwarz. "FAO Schwarz is committed to the education of children and actively promotes parental involvement by encouraging reading at an early age." Located on the second floor facing Madison Avenue, the 1,200 square- foot "BOOKMONSTER" will feature a large selection of more than 3,000 book titles, ranging form the ever-popular character books featuring Madeline, Dr. Seuss and Babar to other much-loved classics such as the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys series. Visitors will discover books that can be personalized by computer, as well as science and special interest books. Hard-to-find series including the Tin-Tin collection will continue to be available. "The dinosaur motif gives "BOOKMONSTER" a playful, interactive character usually not associated with bookstores," said Bill Miller, store manager of FAO Schwarz. "We want to reinforce the idea that reading and books are a lot of fun." "BOOKMONSTER" includes three feature displays that focus on special collections including the classic Madeline series, "Dinotopia" by acclaimed author/illustrator James Gurney and the recent masterpiece "Sign of the Seahorse" from author/illustrator Graeme Base. Mr. Gurney and Mr. Base have also created original cover art exclusively for FAO that is featured on the 1992 FAO Schwarz holiday catalogue, the "Ultimate Toy Catalogue." To advance the enjoyment of reading, FAO Schwarz has scheduled several renowned children's authors to conduct book-signings throughout October and November. Special guests include James Gurney, author of "Dinotopia" (Oct. 15), Robert Bender, author of "A Little Witch Magic" (Oct. 24), Christopher Santoro, illustrator of "Goldilocks" and "Charlie the Caterpillar" (Nov. 7), and David Carter, author/illustrator of "How Many Bugs in a Box" and "Jingle Bugs" (Nov. 14).
