FANUC ROBOTICS SUPPLIES BMW WITH 'TURNKEY' AUTOMATED PRIME AND TOP COAT PAINT SYSTEM

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Dec. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- BMW Manufacturing Corporation has selected FANUC Robotics North America, Inc. to provide an automated paint system for its new Spartanburg, S.C., assembly plant. The eight-robot system will apply prime and top coat paint to BMW's 325 and Roadster models.
In the system, four rail-mounted P-155 paint robots, equipped with paint guns, magnetic door holders and hood and decklid openers, will apply color-specific primer coatings to vehicle interiors. Four additional rail-mounted P-155s, equipped with "moving line" door holders, will apply "environmentally friendly" waterborne base coat paint and two-component clear coatings to door interiors.
"Original designs specified manual spraying for this system's prime and top coat paint applications," said James Vaughan, FANUC Robotics' manager of paint sales. "We believe our extensive experience with vehicle painting systems and process expertise were key influencers in BMW's decision to accelerate the integration of robotics for this program."
Installation for BMW's turnkey paint system is scheduled to begin in June 1994. FANUC Robotics North America, Inc., headquartered in Auburn Hills, is a subsidiary of FANUC Robotics Corporation. FANUC Robotics Corporation, based in the United States, is the robotics industry leader with cumulative sales exceeding $1 billion and more than 15,000 units in service worldwide.
