FANS' pounds 2,000 FOR BABY P MONSTER; EXCLUSIVE.

Byline: Martin Coutts

BABY P brute Steven Barker has built up almost pounds 2,000 in his prison bank account - thanks to DONATIONS from well-wishers.

Vile Barker, 33, receives cash or cheques sent in by "fans" - mostly women who think they can reform him.

He has splashed out pounds 200 of his bonanza on a PlayStation2 console and another pounds 50 on games so he can entertain himself in his cell.

Prison bosses allowed him the privilege of buying from a mail-order catalogue because he is deemed a suicide risk. A source said: "Normally inmates aren't allowed to buy such extravagant things, even with their own money.

"But he's regarded as vulnerable and that means the rules get bent a bit."

Barker, Baby Peter's stepdad, has been on the hospital wing at Wakefield Prison, West Yorks, since February when another lag hurled boiling water over him.

He wanted a PlayStation3 but was told he could not have one because of its wi-fi capabilities. The source added: "It seems weird but cheques or cash arrive every week. It ranges from a couple of quid to pounds 20 or pounds 30 a time.

"He's not the only one - other notorious prisoners get letters, mostly from women who want to get to know them. They think they can change them. It's like fan mail.

"The last thing that sickos like Barker should have is fans. You have to wonder what sort of people want to send him money."

Sadistic Barker was jailed for 12 years last May for causing or allowing the death of 17-month-old Peter.

The tot was found dead in his cot with more than 50 injuries, including fractured ribs and a broken back.

Peter's mother Tracey Connelly, 28, who lived with Barker in Tottenham, north London, is serving a minimum five years. Barker's brother Jason Owen, 37, was jailed for at least three years.

Jobless Barker was also jailed for life for raping a two-year-old girl.

His bid to overturn the conviction was rejected by the Appeal Court in January. Lord Chief Justice Judge said Barker was "a danger to young children".
