FAMILY SAVED TWICE IN ONE YEAR BY CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR
KENOSHA, Wis., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Forklift operator Joseph McKay, 45, credits the Quantum Eye with saving his life and his family's twice in one year.
The Quantum Eye detects elevated levels of carbon monoxide.
One day in late November -- only two weeks after McKay returned home from heart bypass surgery -- his 13-year-old step-daughter Jennifer had a headache that just wouldn't go away.
The next day, Jennifer still felt ill. Then McKay's wife Diane noticed that the Quantum Eye, placed on the refrigerator in their home, had darkened.
McKay called the gas company, who sent a representative to their home.
"He shut off the hot water heater and said we could not use it until it was repaired," said McKay. A rust problem in the family's four-year-old water heater was causing a malfunction and a carbon monoxide build-up.
That close call aside, life resumed as usual at the McKay home until one or two weeks later, when Mrs. McKay once again noticed that the Quantum Eye had changed.
"We called the gas company again. They checked our furnace, our hot water heater and the stove. It turns out the fuel mixture was not proper in our stove, and they had to adjust the air-fuel mixture," McKay said. "Eventually, carbon monoxide would have gotten to us again.
"I feel that Quantum Eye saved myself and my family's lives," he said.
McKay received his Quantum Eye when he hired a local contractor to visit his home and check his furnace at the beginning of the cold season. The contractor gave each of his customers a Quantum Eye after completing the inspection.
The Quantum Eye detects carbon monoxide. The Eye, which is usually yellow, turns green for "caution" when excessive carbon monoxide is present. If the Eye turns blue, it signifies "danger" and requires immediate action for occupants' safety.
